SLATE EXTRACTION PROCESS
Slate extraction is done using manual diamond coated cutting disks, powered by an electric motor. The cuts are perpendicular, usually in disks of 500mm and 600mm, depending on the characteristics of local slate, aiming to obtain the standard size of 2,30 x 1,40 m.
The release of cut slabs is done using mechanical wedges, adapted to a loader. In order to remove the slabs we use a loader with a fork lift attachment replacing the bucket (a loader functioning as a forklift).
The slabs are placed directly on the back of the trucks and transported to the plant where the stones are selected and opened manually, without the utilization of any machinery or mechanical force.
The slabs open easily with just a sledge hammer and chisel. This procedure preserves the natural characteristics of the stone maintaining quality and durability.
