The Extraction Process of Slate

OWN QUARRIES

The quality of the final product depends on the care that begin at extraction. Always seeking to offer you the very best on the market, ALTIVO PEDRAS extracts its products in its own quarries, so ensuring continuity the supply, with high quality standards and delivery.

BLACK SLATE QUARRY

We have the largest black slate quarry in Brazil. Beyond ensuring fast service, this quarry creates a differential of ALTIVO PEDRAS the production of large sizes with unique quality, such as pieces of up to 5 meters long and floor tiles of 100 x 100 cm.

Also nearby this quarry, we installed our newest manufacturing facility, which will double the current production capacity, making us the largest production plant unit in Brazil for slate processing.

GRAY SLATE AND MATACÃO QUARRIES

From our gray from our Gray and Matacão slate quarries, are produced floor tiles, slabs, steps and special products in demanded sizes, as well slate (MATACÃO), which is used for the production of pool table tops.

The (MATACÃO) is a special type of slate, whose characteristics are ideal for use on pool tables. It is not possible to split plates in thickness thinner than 2 or 3 cm (3/4” and 1/ ¼”), thus with no other natural stone that could substitute it for this purpose, if we consider the criteria cost/benefit.

SLATE EXTRACTION PROCESS
1

The slate extraction is made using hand saws with disk diamond, driven by electric motor. Cuts are made in perpendicular lines, usually with 500mm (20”) and 600mm (24”) discs, depending on the local slate characteristics, looking for a standard size of 2.30 x 1.40 m (7.5’ x 4.6’).

2

The loosening of sawn plaques is accomplished through mechanical wedges adapted to the loaders. For the removal of plaques, a loader with quick coupler is used, replacing the bucket (loader with forklift function).

3

Plaques are loaded directly on trucks body, and transported to the industry. Stones are selected in the industry, and split manually without the use of any machinery, or mechanical force.

4

The stone opens easily, and tools used are hammer and chisel. Splitting this way, it will maintain the natural characteristics of the stone, gaining in quality and durability of it.
